What Can Bring On a Migraine?

What triggers a migraine  headache is different for each person. If it can be determined what causes them, they may be easier to avoid . What are some common triggers?

  • Not eating enough, resulting in low blood sugar
  • Flashing and vivid light
  • Loud noises
  • Not getting enough sleep
  • Certain foods like red wine, chocolate, and hard cheeses
  • Hormone cycles in women

Avoiding these can give temporary relief. However, this method does not address why the migraines happen. Looking for an underlying cause can help gain lasting relief.

Could It be a Problem in the Spine?

The spine is made so that it can protect the spinal cord from damage. Messages sent to and from the spinacord and the brain  are vital for helping the body work properly. If a misalignment is found at the base of the skull in the atlas bone (the uppermost bone of the vertebrae), this can be hindering correct communication. The result can be pain in the face, muscle spasms, and head pain – all symptoms of migraines.

Upper cervical chiropractors, who have been trained in using the Blair technique, have seen much success in treating migraines. A study was done involving a 75-year-old woman who suffered from migraines since she was a teen. She used medication to treat her migraine symptoms. These helped, but not very  much. She began visiting a chiropractor who practiced the Blair technique for about 5 months. She reported that her migraines were initially 8 out of 10 pain-wise, but had reduced to 3 out of 10. It was noted that the duration and frequency of her migraines had also declined.

Miguel Flores, DC of Makati City, Manila, Philippines is an upper cervical chiropractor who uses the Blair technique. This is a very gentle, effective adjustment to the spine. It reduces the pressure being put on the spinal cord by the atlas bon e. This promotes healing of nerves and allows for proper function of the spinal cord. When proper messages are being sent, migraine symptoms may  lessen or even disappear altogether.
