Fibromyalgia: Getting a Better Understanding

You may have heard the term or even know someone who is suffering from  fibromyalgia (FM). Maybe you are worried you may develop it at some point. Let’s take a closer look at what it is, what risk factors are involved, and if there is anything that can help fibromyalgia.

Symptoms of Fibromyalgia

First, let’s clarify this is not a disease that can be caught from another person. It is not contagious. As far as symptoms go, they are different for each person. However, here is a list of some of the most common  symptoms those with fibromyalgia will experience:

  • Widespread pain throughout the entire body

  • Stiff joints

  • Bowel and bladder issues

  • Extreme exhaustion

  • Poor memory and confusion

  • Problems getting enough sleep

Who is at Risk? How Does Fibromyalgia Develop?

The chance that someone will develop FM increases as one ages. Women are affected more often than men, particularly as they near menopause.

According to researchers, the brains of those with fibromyalgia work differently than those without this condition, possibly due to anatomical differences or a problem with neurochemicals. Either way, the problem lies in a malfunction in communication between the brain and the body. The body sends signals to the brain that there is pain, when there is actually little or no pain whatsoever.

Where to Find Relief for Fibromyalgia

No medication has been proven to be effective for all people, causing many to turn to alternative, natural forms of care. We have seen great success here at N8 Upper Cervical in helping our patients suffering from fibromyalgia. We focus on correcting any misalignments found in the bones of the upper neck vertebrae. A misalignment in this area puts undue pressure on the brainstem, causing it to send faulty signals to the brain. We use a gentle, precise method to help these bones realign naturally. This restores communication throughout the body and often helps relieve or eliminate the symptoms of fibromyalgia.
