Vertigo-Associated Conditions Relieved by Upper Cervical Chiropractic

Manila upper cervical chiropractors, such as our team, are assisting patients in their journey to healing from vertigo-associated conditions. Vertigo is a common symptom in balance disorders and other medical conditions.

What are some of the leading causes of vertigo? How can upper cervical chiropractic care help with these vertigo-associated conditions that cause severe attacks?

In this special post, we will dive into the top causes of vertigo that can be relieved by upper cervical chiropractic. Then, we will talk about the NUCCA technique, the particular type of upper cervical care offered here at N8 Upper Cervical Chiropractic

Top Vertigo-Related Conditions

Many cases have pointed to a misalignment of the atlas as the root cause of vertigo. The atlas is the uppermost bone in the neck, sitting at the base of the skull. Below are some of the causes of vertigo that can be related to the atlas.

  • BPPV

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo is the number one cause of vertigo. Most of the time, doctors give a BPPV diagnosis to vertigo patients even when the exact underlying cause of their vertigo is unknown.

If you have an upper cervical misalignment and have been dealing with BPPV at the same time, correcting the misalignment may help. In an American case study involving 60 patients with vertigo, all the patients underwent upper cervical chiropractic care. After the care, 80% of the patients reported resolution of their vertigo. The other 20% experienced a reduction in their vertigo attacks.

  • Migraines

According to Upper Cervical Awareness, 1 in 12 migraine patients also experience vestibular symptoms such as vertigo. This condition is called vestibular migraines, and an atlas misalignment can also be the root cause of this condition. Upper cervical chiropractic has provided significant results for many migraine patients in some studies

The atlas plays a role in the occurrence of migraines. This bone protects the brainstem and helps in the transmission of oxygen-rich blood to the brain. When misaligned, the atlas can increase intracranial pressure by restricting cerebrospinal fluid drainage in the brain. This pressure contributes to the onset of migraines.

  • Meniere’s Disease

This is a vestibular disorder that occurs due to too much fluid in one or both ears. As a result, patients can experience vertigo, pressure in the afflicted ear, tinnitus (ringing in the ear), and temporary hearing loss.

Dr. Michael Burcon of Burcon Chiropractic Meniere's Research Institute did a case study involving 300 Meniere’s patients. In the study, as many as 97% of the patients reported dramatic improvement in their vertigo following upper cervical chiropractic care.

Dr. Burcon suggested that the atlas misalignment slowly resulted in a lesion on the eustachian tubes that take fluid away from the ears. As a result, the affected ear was unable to drain fluid. Vertigo and other symptoms developed.

  • Multiple Sclerosis (MS)

Multiple sclerosis is a disorder in which the body attacks the nerves and tears down the protective myelin sheath. This results in the development of scar tissue and several other symptoms, such as balance issues and vertigo. Similar to the other conditions on this list, an atlas misalignment may make this disorder worse.

In a case study involving 44 patients with multiple sclerosis, 40 of them showed symptomatic improvement and no further disease progression during their period of upper cervical chiropractic care.

  • Trauma

Injuries to the head or neck often pave the way for the onset of vertigo. Sometimes vertigo develops immediately. In some other cases, it takes months or years before vertigo manifests.

The force from the injuray may have caused an atlas misalignment. For this reason, we can also consider vertigo a symptom of post-concussion syndrome. If anyone has a history of head or neck injury, it will help to get an atlas alignment assessment with the help of an upper cervical chiropractor.

How We Fix an Atlas Misalignment Through NUCCA

Here at N8 Upper Cervical Chiropractic in Makati City, Metro Manila, we employ the NUCCA technique to correct the atlas misalignments of our patients. If you are not familiar with NUCCA, we want to introduce you to this specific type of upper cervical care.

  • On your first visit

We will ask you to fill out a patient history form. This will help us learn any injuries you had or other things that could be the cause of your atlas misalignment.

Next, you will receive physical tests. It will tell the existence or lack of an atlas misalignment.

Lastly, you will undergo x-rays so we can accurately pinpoint the degree of misalignment. An x-ray will also uncover if there is any injury to the neck that would be risky to adjust.

  • On your second visit

We will reveal the results of all the x-rays and examinations you had. After then, we will define the exact adjustment necessary for the correction of your misalignment. Every adjustment we do is gentle, safe, and customized to each patient.

  • During the ongoing care

We only adjust the upper cervical bones when needed. In the beginning, appointments should be closer together until we stabilize the ligaments and muscles that hold the vertebrae in their positions. After that, your visits would be less frequent, depending on how long your adjustments hold.
