10 Possible Culprits Behind Your Back Pain

Back pain occurs to nearly everyone at some point in time. Lucky are those who only experience brief and mild discomfort. For others, back pain can be so severe and debilitating that performing daily tasks such as going to work or bending down to tie your shoestrings is close to impossible. You may need to visit a Manila back pain chiropractor when this happens.

Back pain occurs when different tissues and structures of the back get inflamed, strained, or damaged. What causes this to take place? There are several possible reasons. To help you be well-informed of the conditions and get the proper treatment, here’s a list of the ten common culprits behind back pain.

1. Disc Degeneration

Due to wear and tear, sedentary lifestyle, and improper nutrition, the discs in your spine can deteriorate over time. Discs can dehydrate, resulting in weakness and vulnerability to injury. We often hear people “shrink” when they age, and this is the reason why people seem to get shorter as they grow old. The discs lose integrity and reduce in height and ability to cushion, which results in a shorter overall height. Disc degeneration can also be the cause of back pain.

2. Trauma or Injury

It is common among those who have had a sports injury or car accident to suffer from back pain. Falling is another common accident that results in back pain. Back injuries can cause muscle or ligament damage, nerve compression or pressure, and disc rupture.

3. Muscle Strain

Lifting heavy objects, overstretching, and improper twisting and bending can lead to muscle strain. Back spasms occur when the muscles supporting your spine become extremely tight and painful.

4. Ruptured or Herniated Discs

Intervertebral discs lie between each spinal vertebra, serving as shock absorbers of the spine. The discs have a jelly-like center and fibrous outer ring which enable proper spinal movement and give the spine cushion and height. Due to injury or wear and tear, the inner disc material can extend to the side of the disc and irritate the surrounding nerves and spinal cord. This herniation or bulge can bring extreme back pain.

5. Ligament Sprain

Ligaments that connect each vertebra in the spinal column give support and stability to the spine. Just like when you have an ankle sprain, the ligaments of your spine can get damaged and tear from an injury or accident.

6. Sciatica

This occurs when something puts pressure on or injures the sciatic nerve, the largest nerve in the body. The sciatic nerve begins from your lower back, and it goes through the buttocks, hips, and down the back of each leg. Sciatica often brings some degree of lower back pain and pain anywhere along the nerve, such as in the buttocks.

7. Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition known to bring widespread pain throughout the body. People who live with fibromyalgia often have musculoskeletal complaints such as neck and back pain.

8. Spinal Stenosis

The vertebrae of your spine protects the spinal cord, which runs through a canal in the middle of your spinal column. When this canal tightens, it puts pressure on the nerves and spinal cord. This can cause intense pain that can hamper your ability to walk, feel sensations on your skin normally, and empty your bladder (which qualifies as a medical emergency).

9. Spondylolisthesis

Spondylolisthesis is the condition wherein a vertebra slips forward out of position and puts undue pressure on the nerve roots exiting the spinal column. It can be a congenital disorder or can be due to spinal degeneration or injury.

10. Radiculopathy

Irritation, compression, or inflammation of the spinal nerve root can result in numbness, back pain, and tingling that spreads to various areas of the body. For instance, a compressed nerve root in the lower back might cause numbness in the foot, and an inflamed nerve in the neck can result in tingling through the shoulder and arm.

A Lasting Solution to Back Pain Without Using Medication

Whatever the reason for your back pain, there are many steps you can take to recover from back pain. You can apply some lifestyle changes such as healthy diet, exercise, quitting smoking, and staying well-hydrated. These natural remedies, combined with a solution that addresses the root cause of the problem, will be ideal for achieving the relief that is beyond temporary. We can get to the root of your back pain with upper cervical chiropractic care.

Your spine is connected by a network of nerves, muscles, tendons, ligaments, and joints. It moves, functions, and compensates based on what happens elsewhere along its structure.  At the top of the neck lies a vertebra called the atlas. The atlas is unique from the rest of the bones in the spine as it does a critical job – it supports the weight of the head and allows your head to move in various directions.  When the atlas misaligns, it can result in major issues for the rest of your back.  When the weight of the head becomes too heavy for the spine, it leads to compensations that can cause muscle strain, spasms, and increased pressure on discs, joints, and nerves.
